Thanksgiving 2011
this year has held incredible highs and far reaching lows.
It has been a year of living each day .....being fully awake
for what that day held
both intense joy
and significant pain
but through it all
I have known again the gift of song
Singing connects me with my soul
through all of life's experiences
songs express - and help me to express
my soul, our soul
stories
so I want to give thanks
thanks for the songs
that have come like gifts
floating from heaven
rising from the earth
these songs that I now am able to share with many others
and these songs heal me
heal us
restore us
and remind us of a deeper truth
of the 'song from beyond'
I also want to give thanks for the
beautiful community that surrounds me
in love
mirroring back to me
truth
love
friendship
and
hope
thank you
thank you
thank you
the words of this classic song express my heart this thanksgiving day:
My life goes on in endless song
above earth's lamentations,
I hear the real, though far-off hymn
that hails a new creation.
Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear it's music ringing,
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?
Oh though the tempest loudly roars,
I hear the truth, it liveth.
Oh though the darkness 'round me close,
Songs in the night it giveth.
No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that rock I'm clinging.
Since love is lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?
When tyrants tremble in their fear
And hear their death knell ringing,
When friends rejoice both far and near
How can I keep from singing?
No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that rock I'm clinging.
Since love is lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?
My life goes on in endless song
Above earth's lamentations,
I hear the real, though far-off hymn
How can I keep from singing?
Lord, how can I keep from singing?
Oh, how can I keep from singing?

Tonight was drumming circle.......
my sister came for the first time and saw with her own eyes
heard with her own ears
and drummed with her own hands!
Why am I so passionate about this drumming circle?
How can a group of strangers come together and in a few months
become such good friends?
There is something about sitting in a circle together
and flowing in a rhythm
where we all have to listen
we all participate
we all contribute
listening and participating
together and alone
touching many of the senses-
we have to become childlike because it isn't always easy
we stumble and we get off the beat
we don't keep doing our western beats of:
1234
1234
Instead, we combine rhythms of 2 and 3 and 4
and then multiply and divide
add and subtract
Boris, what are you talking about?????? in your Russian accent?
So, we laugh and we try
and we drum.
I brought these drums to a women's group 2 weeks ago and the women found our drum circle healing and beautiful. There were tears. One woman shared how in pre-school there is ALWAYS circle.
That is how learning happens - in circle time.
It made me wonder what we've lost in our culture and what we taste a bit of on our drumming nights. There is something about community, about all being a part
all being significant to the whole
One of the dreams I have for this coming year is to create places of 'circle' - places of community
We all need to know
that we are a part of the greater whole

| Boris Sichon & me at Songs, Strings Steps - Abby Arts Centre May 2011 |
this week I was able to enter the joy of being a 'gypsy' woman with the
Songs, Strings & Steps Performance (Calvin Dyck & youth orchestra)
I performed 'Secrets' with Kevin Boese, 'Ordinary Miracle' with Rebecca Sichon
and the 'Gypsy Song Medley' with Boris Sichon.
For each of these songs I was able to don a new costume...
the 'urban music chic girl' for Secrets - the 'classy piano player/singer' for Ordinary Miracle
- and the 'wild gypsy' for our Gypsy tunes.
In the weeks leading up to the show I had fun gathering my gypsy costume which included head scarf, two other scarfs, colorful skirt and loads of jewelry including jingly ankle bracelets, huge rings and necklaces.
There was something liberating about putting that costume on - it was simply FUN.
I have heard that to really know ourselves and what our deepest passions are is to follow our bliss - to follow what brings us 'joy'...to pay attention to those moments that are truly FUN and do more of that in our day to day lives.
Learning these folk gypsy songs with Boris has been extremely fun
when you sing a gypsy song - you cannot be contained
you cannot be shy
you cannot be intimidated - you must....
let it OUT
let it SHINE
let it SPARKLE
These songs are emotional, passionate, and full of energy
To sing them well, you've got to tap into your own emotions, passions and energies
The costume kind of goes with it - you don't wear beige if you are a gypsy.
you don't wear stud earings - you were BIG HOOPS.
You wear COLOUR.
You aren't afraid to stand out and let 'er rip
This is liberating
freeing
to express
to be
to shine
maybe there is a true gypsy in me - whatever the case I may just put on that costume a few more times :-)

| photo by Jason Brown of Revival Art Studio rastudio.ca Rebecca I've shared a bit about Rebecca before... I love this photo of the two of us just before the Love Shines concert. This precious girl loves singing and I want to encourage this gift in her. There is something that she experiences when she sings that I identify with - it is a way to express a part of yourself that doesn't come out any other way. When Rebecca sings, people pause. She sings from her heart, from her soul. she sings with a voice that understands that life is complicated but also that life is beautiful. She sings with emotion and with passion. When we sing 'Ordinary Miracle' together, there is a tenderness we share as well as a passion from the heart. Rebecca has a dream to sing for the rest of her life. I want to be part of making that dream a reality for her. In the meantime, I will enjoy inviting her to sing with me and she will continue to step out on her own as well. This week Rebecca, Boris (her dad) and I will be performing in Abbotsford at the Songs, Strings & Steps performance. I will enjoy every moment of singing with Rebecca again. |

This photo was taken just before the Love Shines concert on April 16th - you may not be able to tell - but there were still a few butterflies in my stomach at this moment! These guys really were fantastic that night and I want to tell you a bit about each of them ...
On the far right - Philip Janz. Philip is the guy that produced the whole CD and engineered and mixed it as well. He is incredibly talented as a musician and as a producer. He has an amazing ear and understood the direction of many of my songs as I shared them with him in a simple form at the beginning of the project. Philip believed in me and pushed me to be the best. He was an amazing support for this release concert and played drums and sang with me. I love this guy!
Beside Philip - Peter Davyduck. Peter is a new friend of mine and I love his positive energy. He was so supportive in the studio and gave his all at our rehearsal and performance on the 16th. Peter - I want you to join me again!
Between me and Peter is Kevin Boese. Kevin I have known the longest of this gang....for around 16 years. He has been a faithful friend and a huge supporter of my dreams. He has served me in a zillion practical ways with setting up sound equipment, performing with me and encouraging me in my dreams. He is a great friend and was an awesome support at this concert.
On the other side of me is Brian Thiessen. Brian did an incredible job of playing various guitar-like instruments on the recording. His musical touch adds a lot to the Love Shines CD. Brian put his back out on the week of the concert and was in tremendous pain that night. But he served me in the midst of his pain and played incredibly. Thank you Brian.
Beside Brian Thiessen is Jonathan VanDyke. Jon and I have been friends for around 5 years now and he has an incredible voice. It was awesome to have him there at the concert to add some harmonies and textures vocally. thanks Jon.
what a great group of guys to surround me as I sang my heart out!!

Song Stories #9
It was the afternoon the day of Myron Berg's funeral that Philip Janz, Boris Sichon and I were working on the song Prayer - which is a chant I wrote this past year. Boris plays the didgeridoo as a low drone while I sing the chant overtop. The low drone takes me to ancient sounds...sounds I have heard from other cultures and time periods. It was a 'moment' during recording when Philip and I looked at each other and each expressed the same thing - 'I was thinking of Gillian'. Gillian is the wife of Myron, who stood and expressed such deep love for her husband that very morning at his funeral which Philip and I both attended. So, Gillian, you were on our minds and hearts as we recorded these sounds and words and as you choose each day to 'breathe'. But I hope these are words that we can all resonate with - we all have a choice each day how we will choose to live.
In the video above, you can get a taste of the world music that Boris has in his fingertips. At about the 4.30 minutes mark you can hear him play the didgeridoo which we have used on this piece.
Here is an excerpt of the words.......
As I breathe in a new day before me
I breathe in Life
Fill me with courage to face the unknown
I breathe in Life
Fill me with wisdom for each step ahead
I breathe in Life
Deepen my roots that I may taste joy
Deepen my trust that I may know peace
I breathe in Life
I breathe in Life

What would this project be without community?
I want to profile some people that have been unbelievable gifts to me in this process - and whom without I would not be where I am today.
I've been dreaming about this CD project for 2 and 1/2 years now. When I realized I would have to raise the funds for this, I was pretty overwhelmed and didn't know what to do. I decided to call on 3 friends to meet with me. They were to tell me if I was completely crazy and I should end the dream right there - or if I should take some steps towards the project. These friends were Evy Klassen, Heather Maddox and Bev Holmes. These 3 women were fantastic. They were blunt, honest and straightforward. They said, 'you are not crazy' ....now here is what you need to do.
We made a plan of communicating the dream to my community and planning 3 concerts for the fall. Bev hosted the Mission concert, Heather helped me by forcing me with vision statements and letters, Evy and I talked almost every day and she constantly encouraged me to not give up.
I formed a 'fellowship' of people that created a wider circle. These people offered notes and words of encouragement, many of which I posted in my office to read on my 'bad' days.
I stepped out with the three concerts. Kevin Boese was an incredible support for these 3 shows, supporting me on his guitar and great musicianship. Boris Sichon helped me with song arrangements and brought an element of theatre and entertainment with his participation in the 2nd and 3rd shows...playing everything from the bones to the beautiful duduk. Jon and Joleen VanDykle joined us as well for the 2nd and 3rd shows with great vocals, bass, and piano accompaniment. Joanne Abraham and Theo Loewen joined us on the 3rd with extra percussion and sound help. We had so much fun together and connected with so many great people from the community.
I realized through all the communication and concerts that this CD project was 'about' community - me connecting with a larger circle and not just doing something on my own. This music is about 'us'. This music is about our shared humanity - our struggles, our longings, our hopes.
Having to reach out and ask for help and support, even though it was incredibly hard and humbling, ended up being such a great gift.
Some other names...
my cool dog park friends that offer friendship and support - Craig, Laurie, Dave, Darrell, Robin, David, Lia, Leah, Anne and others that I can't remember names at this writing :-)
Nik - more about this amazing woman in another blog!
Kelley - who has listened to lots of 'rough drafts'
Lorie, Eden, Joyce K (who baked like mad for Abby concert), Elsie (hosted Chilliwack concert)
Kendra - who gave the first pre-order on-line and has encouraged me so much!!!
and many many others.....
Love you people!!!!!

Song Stories #6
Love Shines CD
Joy is coming
In this video you get a picture into the studio on Friday night when Boris and Philip were going at it working on a whole range of songs. I joined them for a bit of wine and sushi! In this video they are working on the tune, Joy is Coming.
Boris Sichon has been a huge part of this album. He has listened to all the songs and offered so much wonderful feedback and input. He is an amazing musician that has travelled the world and learned from many musical masters. His talent and expertise is a treasure that I deeply value. But more than that, Boris has believed in these songs and helped me to follow my heart with this dream of Love Shines.

This song is the most recent song that has been written for this album. It is simple and reminds me of the time I spent in Africa in my early 20s where i enjoyed beautiful rhythms. I wrote this in December at the beginning of Advent.... Advent reminds me of all the things we are waiting for, longing for and that we hope for. Underneath our waiting, I've become aware of a deep sense of joy. Joy is coming and joy we can taste even now if we pay attention. So, it was with a lot of joy and hope that this song got recorded - and a lot of fun!
